Why Augmented Intelligence is Better than Artificial Intelligence

For years, scientists have been trying to establish a relationship between human beings and robots and this kind of technological development is devouring us. Robots and big computers are seen carrying out operations that have posed a great threat to the existence of human beings.

Human replacement is not a new thing that we have all seen. Although experts suggest that robots automate repetitive tasks that allow an opportunity for you to adapt to advanced level work technology seems to be doing more harm than good.

It raises the question of whether you should back automation to seek greater safety and efficiency or you should embrace augmentation technology to enhance your abilities to perform work instead of replacing you.

Automation appeals human beings

Artificial intelligence, or in other words, robots, are a part of our everyday’s life. In fact, they immersed so well in day-to-day operations that you do not realise you are taking the help of a machine. For instance, you use a dishwasher, a robot floor cleaner, and the like.

Centuries ago, automation introduced the industrial revolution. It made it easier and faster to weave fabrics.

The textile industry was the first that took to robots and machines to replace human beings on the production lines. The idea continues even today. The concept of automation was introduced to other industries, which resulted in faster production and increased profits.

The automotive industry is another good example that relies on automation. It is automating whatever it can. In fact, it is accepting robots at a very wide level. Robots can do everything like welding, painting. Undoubtedly, automation has taken over majority of tasks.

Though robots have been around for a very long time, artificial intelligence has recently seen a drastic improvement. Now advanced computer algorithms are help with automation.

Automation or assistance – which should be preferred?

Artificial intelligence has made your life better, and at this stage, it seems all but impossible to imagine your life without automation. Artificial intelligence can drive a vehicle, design products, compose music, make art, and so on.

It can also imitate images and sounds perfect. It can identify your voice and tell you about the weather outside. Artificial intelligence can generate text, understand your behaviour pattern, and do much more than that.

Although automation has got control over your life, the idea of augmentation was even proposed before automation with the thought of improving the lives of human beings by assisting them. Augmentation and artificial intelligence both use machines and computers, but the former assists human beings to carry out tasks more efficiently while the latter replace human beings.

When the computers were designed the first time, the idea behind their inception was to use them for intelligence applications, not for automation. Afterwards, advanced software was developed to help us do our work with greater efficiency. Here are some of the examples to understand augmentation:

  • A word processor helps you write better, but does not write on your behalf.
  • A CAD technology enables you to make designs, does not create designs for you.
  • Technologies in automobiles help you avoid the collision, do not drive for you.

The philosophy of augmented intelligence was to increase human’s efficiency instead of replacing them with robots; humans first and technology second, in other words. However, after some years, it squeezed out because people were in favour of automation.

After deriving benefits from augmented intelligence, people began to conceptualise the benefits by introducing automation. Eventually, another philosophy took a new turning point – if technology can do something, why not favour it? For instance:

  • If the word processor can check grammar and spelling, why not let it write for you?
  • As your car can avoid the collision, why not let it drive?
  • When medical software can suggest treatments, why not let it diagnose or carry out surgeries?

People often support automation because it is cheaper, efficient, faster and better, but now the question is if automation actually holds water.

Automation has a long way to go

When you fully automate a system, you give priority to technology over human beings. A fully automated factory may not be apt for human beings, and if you manage to keep human beings on production lines, robots will have to work at human speed.

Automation does not seem to be doing any good where customers are missing the interaction with people. You spend a lot of money on software and do not hesitate to apply for a 1000 pound loan with no guarantor.

Instead of automating your workplace, you should think about how you can enhance the productivity of your workers. You should try to figure out how to encourage your workforce to deliver greater output without adopting a fully robotic work environment.

Experts suggest that augmented intelligence aims to enhance the efficiency of workers without harming them. If you make a system completely automated, you will have to go a long way. For instance, if you make a car fully automated, the first thing you need to do is to make roads suitable for such cars because they cannot identify pedestrians.

These cars will not be able to understand the undulation of roads under extreme weather conditions. You will have to spend a fortune on infrastructure to make roads fit for these cars.

The bottom line

Undoubtedly augmented intelligence is better than artificial intelligence as it provides you with a scope of working with robots without the fear of losing your job. It works on a philosophy of human beings first and technology second.

It helps improve the efficiency of human beings in the workplace. Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, replaces human beings. It can do anything, but still, some technology experts are not adding advanced features to the software that can take full control over work without the need of human beings.
