Paella is a popular Spanish rice dish that is made with seafood, meat or vegetables. It can be cooked in different ways but the most common version is the one that is cooked over an open fire. In this article, I will show you how to cook seafood paella the right way so that you can enjoy its amazing flavors.

Ingredients are key to a delicious seafood paella. The type of rice, the stock, and the spices all play an important role in the final flavor of this dish. While it may be tempting to take shortcuts when making paella at home, don’t skimp on the ingredients if you want a truly authentic and satisfying meal.

Here are the Ingredients:

Rice: You’ll need about one cup of rice per person. If you want your paella to be extra flavorful, use Bomba or Calasparra rice. These varieties are short-grain and absorb more liquid, resulting in a tastier dish.

Seafood: As I mentioned, the type of seafood you use is up to you. Feel free to mix and match different kinds of fish, shellfish, and even lobster!

Aromatics: Aromatics such as onions, garlic, and tomatoes are key to flavouring the dish.

Stock: You’ll need about two cups of stock for every cup of rice. Use a good quality chicken or seafood stock for the best flavor.

Saffron: This spice is what gives paella its characteristic yellow colour. It’s also very fragrant and adds a unique flavor to the dish. If you can’t find saffron, turmeric makes a good substitute.

Paprika: Another spice that is commonly used in paella, paprika adds a smoky flavor to the dish.

Olive oil: You’ll need about two tablespoons of olive oil for every cup of rice.

Salt: Add salt to taste, keeping in mind that the stock and seafood will also add some saltiness to the dish.

First step is to heat the olive oil in a large paella pan or skillet over medium-high heat. We don’t want to over heat the pan to prevent ingredients from being burnt or overcooked.

Add the onion, garlic and bell pepper and cook until they are soft. Then, add the rice and saffron threads and stir to coat the grains with oil.

Next, add the chicken broth or fish stock and bring it to a boil. Then, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 15 minutes. After that, add the shrimp to the pan and cook until they are pink and slightly charred around the edges.

Once the shrimp are cooked, remove them from the pan and set them aside. Then, increase the heat to high and cook the rice until it is tender and slightly crispy around the edges.

Now, it’s time to add all of the seafood back into the pan and stir to combine. Cook for another minute or two until everything is heated through.

Once everything is cooked, remove the paella from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together and the rice will absorb all of the delicious juices.
