While the original dropper posts had a lever attached to the seat post for easy access, droppers today usually have a remote lever on their handlebars. Droppers can be connected to the lever via a cable. The dropper post can be moved up or down by pushing the lever. You can push the lever while sitting on your bike. The post will then drop down if you use your body weight to help it. If you stand and push the lever, the dropper will return to its original position.
Droppers are now common on the coolest mountain bikes. Other bikes also use them due to their many benefits. You will be safer when riding your bike with a dropper rail. Choosing the right dropper post for your bike
Three main factors are important when choosing the dropper post that is right for you: size, cable routing, and actuation.
You must first determine the size of your dropper posts. This includes measuring the seat tube diameter, stack height, and travel.
Diameter of the seat tube
Find the inner diameter of your seat tube to determine the diameter of your dropper. You need to select a dropper that fits your frame, as seatposts and dropper post diameters are different. The most common seat post diameters are 27.2mm, 30.9mm, 31.6mm, and 34.9mm. You can find the diameter by looking at the number on your current seat posts, checking your bike’s specifications online, or taking your seat post to your local bicycle shop to have it measured.
Height of the stack
The stack height of your bike is the next step to determining the length of the dropper. This determines the height of your seat at its highest point. It can be measured from the top collar of the seat to the rails on your saddle. There are three standard sizes: 100, 125 and 160mm. Your stack height must be equal or lower than your maximum seat height. You will have difficulty reaching the pedals if you do not.
To ensure that the dropper fits your bike frame properly, you must determine the overall length as well as the insertion length. The overall length indicates how long the post is fully extended. While the insertion length measures how far the frame extends beyond the dropper post, it shows the length of the entire length.
It is important to measure the insertion length by taking into account both the maximum and minimum lengths. The maximum length of the dropper posts can be inserted into your bike frame. Start at the top of the seat collar and measure to the end. The maximum length for the insertion of the post should not exceed its overall length.
The minimum length of insertion refers to the distance the post must go into the frame in order to avoid damaging your seatpost. You must not raise your post higher than the line.

You can’t install an internal routing dropper point on a frame without internal cable routing. However, external routing can be set up if the bike has either option. In this instance, cable routing is a matter for preference. Internal routing is done inside the bike’s frame. It protects cables and avoids clutter. External routing is simpler to set up and manage.
You can determine the type of cable routing that you require for your best dropper post by looking for a small hole in your bike’s frame. This usually indicates that the bike can have internal routing. You can also check the website of your bike manufacturer for information on cable routing.
Hydraulic, electronic, and mechanical actuators
There are three types of dropper posts: electronic, hydraulic, or mechanical. The most common use of dropper posts is mechanical. These are the most cost-effective and simple option. Although they offer smoother performance, hydraulic droppers are more difficult to set up. Although electronic dropper posts are more efficient and offer better routing, they can be expensive.
How to Install a Dropper Pole
You must install the dropper post after you have chosen the right one for your bike. We have created a six-step guide to help you install the dropper posts.
1. Get the tools ready
Preparing the tools is the first step. Place your tools in a well-lit area. For installation of a dropper pin, you will need Allen keys, assembly compound and cable cutters. Lube oil and grease are also required.
2. Mount the lever
Mount the lever at the end of the post. When activating the dropper via the lever with your left thumb, ensure that the lever is on the left side. Over-bar levers are mounted to the left side of the handlebars, and under-bar levers on the right.
3. The outer cable is routed
Once you have mounted the lever, route the outer dropper cable. You will need to route the outer dropper post cable using the cable mounting points. Start by routing the cable from the right side to the headtube, and then down to the downtube. Continue under the bottom bracket and back to the rear end of the seat tube. Finally, insert the cable into the routing hole until it reaches the location where your dropper will be. Move back to the front. To reduce the length of the cable, you can use cable cutters. Next, grease the cable ferrules and proceed to the next step.
4. The inner cable should be fed
Start by wiping down the cable with wet grease. Then, clean the cable with wet lube and then feed it. To determine if you should feed the inner cable from the post or lever, refer to the manual. Once you’re done with feeding the inner cable you need to secure it using a set screw.
5. Tension the cable
Tensioning the cables is essential to ensure proper installation. To check how the lever is working, press the lever. You can loosen the set screw to make it feel looser. Pull some inner cable to fix it. Once everything is in place, adjust the tension with the barrel adjuster.
6. Place the seat
Positioning your seat post is the last step in installing a dropper pin. Start by moving your dropper post to the right. It is important to position it so that your dropper post extends slightly beyond your knee. This will make it easier to climb. Finally, tighten your seat clamp. Final touch: Check the cables and the operation of the dropper to ensure everything is in order.
Dropper Post Maintenance
Your dropper seat posts will last a long time if you maintain them properly. Dropper posts require regular maintenance. This includes cleaning, lubricating and inspecting.
